The purpose of the Mountain Stage NewSong Contest is to offer recognition and support to the best unsigned performing songwriters they can find, as well as to bring together people who love to perform their own songs in a gathering of musical camaraderie.

Finalists compete in the regional finals on Wednesday, June 7 at Jammin Java www.jamminjava.com in Vienna, VA. The winner of the round and the top 5 co-winners go to the international finals of the Mountain Stage NewSong Contest on Saturday, Aug. 26 in Shepherdstown, WV (less than 90 minutes by car from DC and Baltimore. One co-winner will be chosen to perform on a Mountain Stage show. NewSong Live Round Contest & Contest Finals: Sat Aug 26

The NewSong Academy, three days of intensive workshops on songcraft and live performance, celebrates its 2nd year in hip, historic Shepherdstown, WV (just 90 minutes from Washington, D.C. and Baltimore). The Academy occurs immediately before NewSong, home of the great weekend gathering of performers and songwriters and the Mountain Stage NewSong Contest Live Round & Finals. The Academy is perfect for writers and performers at all levels including professional songwriters and touring artists, musicians whose true love is their weekend gigging, beginner songwriters and first time performers.

We are very excited to announce this year's stellar faculty lineup: Kathy Mattea, Billy Jonas, Paul Reisler, Jason Blume and Ysaye M. Barnwell of Sweet Honey in the Rock. Workshops are taught by major hit songwriters, top national performers and music industry experts in an intimate setting that makes the classes highly engaging, informative and inspiring. Click here to learn more about our faculty.

1. A spot in the Mountain Stage NewSong Contest Live Round on Saturday, August 26. As space is limited for this live round, this is available to all registrants until all spaces are full.

2. Free camping at the NewSong Campground in Morgan’s Grove near downtown—with campfire song circles and mingling with writers and performers from around the country.

3. The Academy closing faculty concert on Friday evening, August 25 at the Frank Center on the Shepherd University campus.

ASCAP Writer’s Showcase
Kennedy Center, Washington DC
May 1, 2006

The ASCAP Writer’s Showcase was held in Washington DC for the very first time!  This is great news for the region’s songwriters, musicians, and other industry professionals in the Mid-Atlantic area.  We now have a high-profile platform to showcase our songwriting talent and further establish DC in the industry as a rich and diverse emerging music market. Our guest host was Stephen Schwartz, highly acclaimed composer for such successful Broadway shows as Pippin, Godspell, and his newest smash hit, Wicked.

ASCAP selected 12 winning songs submitted by songwriters from the Mid-Atlantic region.  Each songwriter (or their designated singer) performed one song in this showcase evening.  An established New York cabaret artist performed for songwriters who needed a singer to perform their winning song.  Musical genres included musical theatre, cabaret, jazz, and light pop.  Songwriters competed from throughout the Mid-Atlantic region (DC, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Delaware). Writers did not have to be ASCAP members. This showcase directly followed a one-hour interview of Stephen Schwartz, our guest host, by Michael Kerker, VP for Musical Theatre, ASCAP.

• SAW - Songwriters Association of Washington
